From
Hilliard This Week, June 2, 2010:
A
retired Hilliard teacher presented a sparkling
children's concert May 28 at Alton Darby Elementary
to reward students for winning the "Change
for Haiti" challenge.
Following
the earthquake in Haiti earlier this year,
spare change was collected over a two-week
period by students at four schools: Alton
Darby ($925.14); Norwich ($461.64); Hilliard
preschool ($160.39); Beacon ($157) and miscellaneous
donations ($300). The $2,004.17 will be presented
to UNICEF.
Debbie
Taylor, a Hilliard resident who taught Unified
Arts (music and movement) for 35 years, came
up with the "Change for Haiti" idea.
"I
try to be a superhero," Taylor said.
"Whenever I hear of a disaster, I run
to the rescue. We did the tsunami, Katrina,
so when I heard about Haiti, I thought I've
got to do something. I thought this was an
easy way to raise money, get the kids involved
and give them something in return at the end
of the school year."
